British Airways goes super premium on A380 superjumbos

British Airways is reinforcing its premium proposition by transforming its Airbus A380s with new interiors from nose to tail. A massive new refurbishment project for the iconic superjumbos is now underway at MRO giant Lufthansa Technik Philippines in Manila.

The oneworld member, which operates a dozen A380s, has outlined a retrofit plan that will introduce the world’s largest business class cabin, with 106 revamped Club Suites (nine more than the current layout) spread across the entire upper deck. These doored mini-suites are based on Collins Aerospace’s enduring Elevation platform.

BA confirms it has also tapped RECARO Aircraft Seating for its World Traveller Plus premium economy seats and World Traveller economy class seats, plus larger Panasonic Avionics IFE screens with Bluetooth connectivity across cabins, ensuring that passengers have the option of listening to the entertainment through their personal headphones.

The screen sizes in BA’s Club Suites and custom, Collins-made First suites are particularly noteworthy, sized at 18.5″ and a whopping 32”, respectively. Additionally, the refitted A380s will feature redesigned galleys and stairways with impressive new finishes.

This monumental work, which involves the installation of more than 35,000 individual parts across each double-decker widebody, required an extremely capable MRO and refurbishment facility. And so, BA turned to Lufthansa Technik Philippines, the joint venture between Lufthansa Technik and Philippines’ MacroAsia Corporation, which has extensive experience in A380 overhauls.

“There is only one facility in the world capable of carrying out this work to our specifications, and that is Lufthansa Technik in Manila,” British Airways tells Runway Girl Network. “The installation is being carried out jointly by Lufthansa Technik and our own Engineering and Maintenance teams.”

When the first retrofit is completed, the four-cabin, four-engined jet will feature 417 seats across its two decks.

The 106 Club Suites in Club World on the upper deck will be complemented on the lower deck by 12 First suites in an ultra-private cabin, 84 in World Traveller Plus and 215 in World Traveller.

The removal of two First seats and 88 World Traveller economy seats will facilitate BA’s new premium-heavy layout, including what amounts to a far larger premium economy cabin than the current 55-seat cabin.

In all, BA’s refurbishment plan calls for a near 22% increase in premium seating capacity over the current 469-seat layout.

Let’s take a look.

12 ultra-private First suites

Close observers of the industry are well aware that BA has been working with seatmaker Collins and design house tangerine on a custom First class suite for its A380s. Renderings of the sophisticated new product were first revealed at the end of 2024.

While BA is reducing the First cabin seat count by two for the refitted A380s, it is upping the premium factor with a 60” privacy wall, a fully flat 6ft 7in bed with a mattress topper, an ottoman to facilitate companion dining in every suite, and that crisp new 32” Panasonic IFE screen.

A personal wardrobe, an in-suite mini bar, and other ‘easter egg’ surprises throughout the suite round out the hard product offering, of which BA has teased some photos.

Soft product and onboard service also comes in for a glow up in First, but BA is not waiting for the debut of the first refitted A380; it is already distributing a swank new unisex amenity kit from British heritage house Swaine, as well as new pyjamas and restaurant-quality meals to passengers on outbound long-haul flights from London.

106 Club Suites in Club World

The 106-seat Club World cabin on the upper deck will be split into four separate zones, with each seat boasting a refreshed palette, a privacy door, and an 18.5” Panasonic IFE screen. Club World passengers will also have access to the Club Kitchen onboard.

With swish new CMF (color, materials and finish), the Elevation-based Club Suites, configured 1-2-1 reverse-herringbone style, represent an evolutionary approach to Club World.

They tick all the boxes for a modern business class experience aboard the A380, whilst providing the sort of supply-chain confidence that a trusted off-the-shelf platform can offer.

World Traveller Plus

Winged privacy took wing in premium economy on BA’s Boeing 787-9 twinjets and this increasingly standard-for-the-class feature is also in line for World Traveller Plus on the refitted A380s. Quilted seat covers are also a nice touch.

Frequent flyers are already celebrating British Airways’ decision to go larger on the IFE screens, sized 13″ in World Traveller Plus, declaring that the carrier now has a “competitive product.”

In World Traveller, BA promises that the economy seats “are comfier than before and come with adjustable headrests” plus a USB-C power port at every seat. A spokeswoman for the carrier confirms to RGN that the IFE screen in each seat is sized 12″. Bluetooth connectivity is available in every cabin class.

“This is a major milestone for British Airways and the future of our A380 fleet, marking one of the most significant transformations we’ve ever undertaken on any aircraft,” British Airways chairman and CEO Sean Doyle says in a statement.

“We’ve completely reimagined the customer experience, introducing new and updated seats in every cabin, all carefully considered to deliver greater comfort and an elevated customer experience. At the heart of the transformation is our brand-new First suite, but this investment goes far beyond a single cabin. From redesigned interiors and upgraded dining to new amenities and service delivery, every detail has been thoughtfully designed with our customers front and centre, helping them to have a more seamless and memorable experience when they fly with us.”

The refresh comes as American Airlines, a transatlantic joint business partner to BA, and fellow oneworld members Alaska and sister Hawaiian launch premium pushes of their own.

BA’s first refitted A380 is expected to enter service in the coming months. And work on the 12-strong fleet is expected to be completed by summer 2028.

That equipage timeline syncs nicely with BA’s concurrent fleet-wide installation of SpaceX’s Starlink Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite-based inflight connectivity, which is powering the carrier’s free Wi-Fi and is in line for the A380s.

Emirates has already fitted A380 aircraft with Starlink using not one, not two, but three phased array antennas. It will be interesting to see if British Airways takes the same three-ESA approach for this double-decker behemoth.

BA’s investment in the passenger experience is certainly not relegated to an onboard play. The carrier has also announced plans to bring a new lounge to London Heathrow Terminal 5 C Gates, as part of its wider lounge transformation plan for Heathrow. The new lounge will offer airfield views and feature one of the world’s longest airport lounge bars, BA says.

Meanwhile, the carrier has released a comprehensive cabin fly-through video of what passengers can expect aboard its refurbished A380s.
