Air Tahiti, which operates flights to 48 islands in French Polynesia, is now offering wireless inflight entertainment aboard its fleet of ATR turboprops. Passengers can stream a variety of content to their own devices.
The French airline company confirms to Runway Girl Network that it turned to PXCom SAS for the onboard hardware and some of its content service provisioning. Financial terms of the arrangement have not been disclosed.
“Content such as US series, games, cartoons, press, etc., is provided by PXCom, while local content such as documentaries about our islands, podcasts, local press, etc., is provided by our partners,” says an Air Tahiti spokesperson.
Headquartered in Martillac, France, PXCom specializes in developing digital solutions on board aircraft, offering what it calls “turnkey Wi-Fi—IFE” to operators. It boasts 25-plus airline customers and more than 300 aircraft installed, and its digital advertising server is used by various CSPs.
Based at Faa’a International Airport on the island of Tahiti, Air Tahiti operates a fleet of 10 ATR 72s and two ATR 42s, in addition to a few smaller turboprops.
In a published statement, the carrier is now urging ATR passengers to “explore our islands and programmes from your phone, tablet, or laptop” with the PXCom wireless IFE, including more than 40 local documentaries about the French Polynesian islands, over 30 podcasts, popular US television shows, local and international news, music, cartoons and more.
How can passengers avail of the service?
Air Tahiti instructs them to: activate airplane mode and Wi-Fi on their device; connect to the AirTahitiOnboard Wi-Fi; scan the QR code displayed on board or enter the address airtahiti.ife.aero in their browser; and select their language (French, English, or Tahitian) in settings.
The airline asks all passengers using the service to wear their headphones, and notes that headphones are also available for purchase on board.
