JetBlue Airways has been quietly permitting VoIP calls on its Fly-Fi-equipped aircraft (as evidenced by the video below). But JetBlue VP corporate communications Jenny Dervin confirms today that the carrier has opted not to permit VoIP or cell phone calls in-flight.

“Our policy is driven by customer preference and the people have spoken,” she declared this morning in a FaceBook exchange discussing a blog post written by “Aviation Queen” Benet Wilson about Delta Air Lines and Southwest Airlines’ decision to retain the current ban on cell phone calls, even if the FCC approves the practice.

Wilson considers the prospect of inflight voice calls to be “another circle of hell”.

Asked if JetBlue would include VoIP calls in its policy on cell phone calls, Dervin said, “Yes indeed. It’s harder to police but the policy is about cabin environment and customer experience, so VoIP is included.”

She notes that JetBlue “launched Fly-Fi just as the conversation around inflight calls was getting started. We are nothing if not nimble!”

Dervin describes how JetBlue stays nimble in this Lean Into Aviation profile.
