Seamless Journey Award submissions accepted through October 9

With digital and connectivity services on commercial aircraft expected to become a $26 billion market by 2046, there has perhaps never been a more appropriate time to explore innovations that break down the boundaries between the connected cabin and the wider travel experience, and recognize them accordingly.

That’s among the reasons why the Crystal Cabin Award (CCA), which is renowned for honoring innovation in the aircraft interiors space, has joined forces with global non-profit, the Airline Passenger Experience Association (APEX) on a new CCA award category, the Seamless Journey Award.

As its name suggests, the Seamless Journey Award goes beyond individual products and isolated touchpoints to recognize ideas that make travel more seamless by taking a holistic view of the experience before, during and after a flight.

“When we came up with the idea for this award we were thinking of things like better handovers between parts of the journey, like transfers between different transport modes, or connecting baggage services with the cabin. But it’s going to be fascinating to see what other ideas come up,” Angus Baigent, who heads up marketing and communications for Hamburg Aviation and the Crystal Cabin Award, tells Runway Girl Network.

Indeed, submissions can run the gamut, covering everything from coordinated accessibility services across different stages of travel to data-driven solutions that provide continuity across touchpoints.

New forms of industry cooperation will also be considered, such as those that see airlines, airports, manufacturers, technology providers and service partners collaborate to create a seamless journey.

“This award throws a spotlight on what is achievable. Also, we think visibility for collaborative approaches can create an incentive for companies to work together in new ways,” said Baigent.

There’s clearly an opportunity for applicants to think outside the box.

For instance, when asked by RGN if ideas that tackle the journey from an operational standpoint — such as advanced electronic flight bag (EFB) applications for pilots that support fuel saving flight paths and ensure a more seamless passenger experience — can be submitted, Baigent said: “Any innovation that adds customer value and that links the cabin to other parts of the journey, visible or not, are eligible.

“It’s going to be exciting to see how entrants take that remit and apply it, even to the cockpit!”

Now open, the application submission period will run through October 9.

The winner will receive the Crystal Cabin Award trophy during a ceremony on November 19 at Swissôtel The Stamford in Singapore, during the week of the APEX FTE EXPO 2026.

“‘Seamless Journey’ pairs the Crystal Cabin Award’s rigor on the aircraft interior with APEX’s view of the passenger’s entire path, debuting in Singapore as Asia’s aviation market increasingly sets that agenda. Airlines, airports, and manufacturers built this category together because none of them can deliver a seamless trip alone,” said APEX CEO Dr. Joe Leader.

Anyone from established players to students are welcome to apply, however.

“APEX is the ideal partner for this initiative: its global community represents the full spectrum of the passenger experience. Together, we can give cross-sector ideas and collaborations the international platform they deserve,” said Angela Wockert, project manager of the Crystal Cabin Award.”
