As the Crystal Cabin Award opens submissions for its 2027 competition, its 20th anniversary puts a question to the aviation industry: which ideas will define the next chapter of the passenger experience?

Companies, designers, researchers and students are invited to enter from today, with submissions open until 21 November 2026. The eight winners will be announced in Hamburg on 6 April 2027, during Aircraft Interiors Expo (AIX).

A rich history of innovation – and a tantalizing look into the future

Since its inception in 2007, the Crystal Cabin Award has recognized products, technologies and concepts that challenge established thinking about aircraft interiors. Its anniversary is a celebration of both ingenuity and of the people who turn a different way of thinking into a better way of flying.

As in the previous year, entries are sought across eight categories: Accessibility, Breakthrough Start-ups, Cabin Concepts, Cabin Technologies, IFEC & Digital Services, Passenger Comfort, Sustainable Cabin and University.

“The vibrant history of the Crystal Cabin Award shows that cabin innovation is not only about what an aircraft interior looks and feels like, it is also about the barriers removed, the resources saved and the problems solved, all in the service of the best passenger experience,” explains Angela Wockert, Project Manager for the Crystal Cabin Award.

“Over the last 20 years, the award has gone from strength to strength because it has unerringly identified trends, honored creative solutions and shone a spotlight on excellence passengers might not even see or experience directly. We aim to carry on this tradition while working together with our partners and sponsors to lift the award to new heights looking forward,” she adds.

Eight categories, 27 jurors and one binding spirit

The 2027 competition retains the eight categories from 2026: Accessibility; Breakthrough Start-Ups; Cabin Concepts; Cabin Technologies; IFEC & Digital Services; Passenger Comfort; Sustainable Cabin; and University. Together, they recognize innovation across the cabin, from individual components to complete interiors.

The Crystal Cabin Award international jury of 27 experts will evaluate the entries through a multi-stage selection process. The shortlist is scheduled for mid-December 2026, followed by the announcement of finalists in February 2027. Final presentations to the jury will take place on 5 April, ahead of the anniversary ceremony in Hamburg the following evening.

Submissions for the Crystal Cabin Award 2027 close on 21 November 2026. Category criteria, participation information and application materials are available on the Crystal Cabin Award website here.

A complimentary Initiative in Singapore

About the Crystal Cabin Award

The Crystal Cabin Award is the most prestigious international prize dedicated exclusively to innovations in aircraft cabins. Under the motto “Let your ideas take off,” it annually honors outstanding products and concepts that enhance the flying experience – from smart single seats to connected galleys. Entries are evaluated by an independent jury representing academia, engineering, airlines, aircraft manufacturers, and trade media. The award was initiated by the Hamburg Aviation cluster and is organized by the Crystal Cabin Award Association. Since 2007, it has been presented during the Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg. Today, it is recognized worldwide as a seal of quality – and as a springboard for many products that later enter service in commercial aircraft.
