RECARO Aircraft Seating’s vision for bringing more sustainable features to aircraft seats has become a reality.

Having successfully certified and introduced a recycled PVC cable plate into series production, the seatmaker confirms that the product is “now standard” across its economy and premium economy platforms.

This means that “every future customer program for R1, R2, R3, and R4 will be delivered with this more sustainable solution,” company product manager Violina Mikova says in a statement published on LinkedIn.

“What sounds like a simple material change is actually a great example of how sustainability, technical qualification, and business viability can come together to create real impact.”

Used to anchor cables, the PVC cable plate is among a cluster of eco-friendly solutions to emerge from RECARO’s modular R Sphere economy class sustainability demonstrator, which combines innovative materials, lightweight design and circular thinking to reduce environmental impact.

The concept seat won a coveted 2026 Crystal Cabin Award in the Sustainable Cabin category.

R Sphere’s literature pockets are made from discarded fishing nets, while the seat bumper inlays feature real wood. These certified materials are being flight-tested by Iberia.

Including the recycled PVC cable plate as a standard offering from RECARO is a “historic milestone,” Mikova says.

It comes at a time when sustainability has become a central design principle in aviation rather than a ‘nice to have.’

To wit, major airframers Airbus and Boeing are driving forward sustainability improvements on their respective aircraft platforms in a bid to slash CO2 emissions, and improve circularity.

Boeing has also observed that a growing number of passengers are making purchasing decisions based on the qualities of the companies they interact with, and sustainability is increasingly becoming a key marker.
