Though it has largely operated in stealth mode in business aviation for several years, FlightPath3D’s customizable moving maps with cinematic views are now flying on thousands of BizAv tails, and the Lake Forest, California-based firm is getting a little more vocal about its ever-growing footprint.
Having forged several strategic partnerships in the sector, FlightPath3D’s map software is piped over a variety of cabin management and inflight entertainment (CMS/IFE) systems on business and VVIP aircraft in the world fleet, and streamed wirelessly to passengers’ own devices.
“We are actually linefit on every Textron Citation aircraft that comes out of the factory and have been for years. We’ve never announced it, and I’m happy to tell you that right now. It’s fully customized to the livery of the owner,” company president Duncan Jackson revealed to Runway Girl Network in an in-depth interview.
Previously publicized partnerships in the BizAv space include a fleet-wide arrangement with Gogo “for all of their Gogo Vision and portal experience,” Jackson noted.
Another hugely meaningful relationship is FlightPath3D’s collaboration with Astronics Corporation, whose Astronics CSC unit worked with the map-maker to develop an advanced moving map system for business aircraft.
The so-called SkyShow Server is a drop-in replacement for legacy Rockwell Collins Airshow systems. Featuring multiple video outputs, it ensures compatibility with a variety of IFE systems on bizjets. Passengers can also explore the map’s real-time flight data and immersive visuals directly from their personal devices.
“There are thousands of aircraft there that have a need and a desire,” Jackson said of the swap-out opportunity.
FlightPath3D also lays claim to a dominant position in the VVIP moving map market.
“It’s a very small market but we offer a very white glove service there,” the FlightPath3D president explained, noting that the firm “probably do a presidential aircraft every matter of weeks, or Head of State aircraft. And the owners love it. It’s world class.”
All those learnings trickle down to how FlightPath3D serves the rest of the BizAv market.
The proof of FlightPath3D’s success in the sector is in the pudding.
Less than a year ago, FlightPath3D hit the 2,500 tail mark in BizAv (in addition to its several thousand aircraft in commercial aviation), and it’s getting “hits on our website weekly” for requests from business aircraft operators, asking “can I get your map?”
Borrowing a British idiom, Jackson enthused about the firm’s BizAv business, “It’s going like the clappers.”
