Saft, a wholly owned subsidiary of TotalEnergies and a global leader in advanced battery technology, has been selected by WestJet, a Canadian airline, for the battery retrofit of its entire Boeing 737 fleet, reflecting the airline’s continued confidence in Saft’s proven aviation battery solutions.
Under this agreement, WestJet has equipped its Boeing 737 aircraft with Saft’s 539CH1 Ultra Low Maintenance (ULM) batteries, a 28-volt, 53 Ah nickel-based solution designed to provide reliable power for critical standby systems and auxiliary power unit (APU) starts.
WestJet’s choice supports its focus on operational excellence by prioritizing aircraft components that combine dependable performance with simplified maintenance. Saft’s Ultra Low Maintenance technology is engineered for long service life and reduced maintenance requirements, helping operators to enhance aircraft availability while optimizing their total cost of ownership.
“WestJet’s selection of Saft Ultra Low Maintenance batteries reflects strong confidence in the long-term reliability and operational value of our nickel-based technology. Our ULM batteries are designed to support airline operators to achieve high levels of fleet readiness while streamlining maintenance operations across the aircraft lifecycle,” said Chuck Schofield, Vice President, Aviation Sales & Marketing at Saft.
“Moving to an all Saft fleet not only helps standardize our supply chain, but the superior maintenance intervals and performance offered by Saft batteries also bring operational efficiencies to our fleet,” said Shail Oza, Director, Supply Chain at WestJet.
The batteries are manufactured at Saft’s Valdosta, Georgia facility, leveraging five decades of expertise in the design and production of aviation batteries. For this agreement, Saft aviation batteries are being supplied by Boeing Distribution Inc. (formerly Aviall), who will also provide integrated aftermarket support and logistics’ services for the airline.
This agreement reinforces Saft’s position in the 28‑volt aviation battery market and underscores the long‑standing reputation of nickel‑based technology as a mature, proven solution, valued by airline operators worldwide for its durability, robustness, and reliable performance over time.
