Green Cabin Alliance (GCA) has today opened membership for Airline Allies, a new collaborative initiative designed to help airlines accelerate the transition towards more sustainable and circular aircraft cabins.

The voluntary initiative brings airlines alongside the GCA’s existing membership base of manufacturers, suppliers, designers, material innovators and other industry stakeholders to tackle shared sustainability challenges, helping transform the aircraft cabin from a traditionally linear model into a more circular and environmentally responsible part of aviation.

With Boeing and Airbus already part of the GCA advisory board, the inclusion of airlines will enhance the touchpoints across the industry.

While the aviation industry has made significant progress in reducing operational emissions through fleet renewal, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and operational efficiencies, cabin sustainability remains a largely untapped opportunity.

Decisions around cabin materials, interiors, waste management, refurbishment and end-of-life recycling are often fragmented across the supply chain, making meaningful progress difficult to achieve in isolation.

GCA’s initiative aims to address this challenge by giving airlines a central role in shaping practical solutions that reflect real operational requirements while encouraging greater collaboration across the aviation ecosystem.

Elina Kopola, Founder of Green Cabin Alliance, comments: “The aviation industry has made enormous progress in tackling operational emissions, but the aircraft cabin represents one of the biggest remaining opportunities to improve sustainability. Every journey begins and ends in the cabin, yet many of the challenges surrounding materials, waste and circularity cannot be solved by airlines working alone.”

Unlike traditional industry forums that focus primarily on discussion, the Airline Allies initiative will deliver structured Working Group Sprints, bringing together airlines and industry partners to identify shared challenges, exchange expertise and develop practical, scalable solutions that can be adopted across the industry.

By participating, airlines will gain access to industry insights, sustainability benchmarking, emerging technologies and materials, and opportunities to collaborate directly with suppliers, OEMs and recycling specialists. The initiative also aims to help airlines translate ambitious sustainability goals into measurable action across cabin operations while strengthening procurement decisions, reducing waste and supporting long-term ESG objectives.

“Airline Allies gives airlines the opportunity to help shape practical, industry-wide solutions alongside the organisations designing, manufacturing and maintaining tomorrow’s aircraft cabins. By bringing the right stakeholders together, we can accelerate innovation, reduce duplication of effort and make sustainable cabin design a standard part of the aviation industry,” added Kopola.

Membership is voluntary and open to airlines of all sizes and at every stage of their sustainability journey. Participants are not expected to have already achieved sustainability leadership but are encouraged to contribute operational insight, share challenges and collaborate on solutions that can benefit the wider industry.
