The new security screening area, covering 3,500 square metres, is designed to deliver faster, smoother and more intuitive processes for travellers. The facility is equipped with fourteen security lanes featuring state-of-the-art technology that allows passengers to leave liquids and electronic devices inside their bags.

Each lane enables up to four people to prepare simultaneously, greatly improving throughput, while predictive technologies further speed up the process by directing passengers toward the first available lane. A dedicated Fast Track Lane and a Family Lane have also been introduced to cater to different traveller needs.

The new security zone benefits from abundant natural light thanks to its architectural design, reducing the need for artificial lighting. This contributes to Milan Bergamo Airport’s broader sustainability commitments and supports the airport’s efforts to lower energy consumption.

Giacomo Cattaneo, Director of Commercial Aviation at SACBO, said: “With this expansion, we are offering our passengers one of the most advanced and passenger-friendly security systems in Europe. The combination of cutting-edge technology, intelligent passenger flow management and a bright, spacious environment represents a major step forward in comfort, efficiency and sustainability at Milan Bergamo Airport.”

As part of the upgrade, Milan Bergamo Airport is also introducing an additional 2,000 square metres of space to the duty-free area, making it three times larger than the current facility, offering an enhanced shopping experience and a wider assortment of international brands.

The terminal expansion includes two new non-Schengen gates, increasing the airport’s total to 27 gates. With the new configuration effective from summer 2026, Milan Bergamo Airport will operate 16 Schengen and 11 non-Schengen gates (compared to the current 15 Schengen and 12 non-Schengen positions), adding 1,000 square metres to the boarding area. This will improve operational flexibility and support the airport’s growing international network.

The project contributes 7,400 square metres of new space, complemented by the 3,700 square metres added to the ground floor earlier this year, which features an enlarged check-in area, upgraded baggage system and expanded warehouse facilities. Combined, these improvements offer passengers significantly more comfort and space throughout their journey.

Milan Bergamo Airport’s development roadmap continues beyond the terminal expansion. Construction is underway on the new Airport Service Center, which will include a 4-star Hilton Garden Inn hotel and a modern conference facility, scheduled to open in winter 2026.

In parallel, work progresses on the rail link that will connect Milan Bergamo Airport directly with Milan city centre in just 45 minutes. The line is expected to be fully operational by December 2026, providing a fast and sustainable transport alternative for passengers.

With these major upgrades now taking shape, Milan Bergamo Airport continues its commitment to delivering a modern, efficient and seamless travel experience for all passengers, while strengthening its role as a key gateway for Northern Italy and a preferred partner for airlines across Europe and beyond.
