CLEAR, a private company operating under TSA’s Registered Traveler Program, is piloting these specific eGates. Launched on Sunday, Aug. 17, the technology is now operational at ATL’s Lower North Checkpoint within the CLEAR Plus lane, marking the start of a three-airport rollout.

The eGates use biometric-enabled identity verification to allow for autonomous passenger check-in at security, enabling TSA officers to focus on screening operations while maintaining the agency’s and the Airport’s security standards. This advancement is expected to improve passenger throughput and help manage higher volumes during peak travel periods.

“At ATL we are constantly seeking ways to improve the passenger experience while maintaining the highest security standards,” said Airport General Manager Ricky Smith. “The introduction of TSA’s eGates reflects our commitment to making travel more seamless, efficient, and ready to meet the demands of the world stage.”

Preparing for Global Travel Demand

The launch of eGates comes at a pivotal time as ATL prepares for significant increases in passenger demand, including the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup. With Atlanta serving as a major gateway for domestic and international visitors, the technology is designed to streamline checkpoint operations, reduce congestion, and support a smoother travel experience.

Alongside the eGate rollout, TSA and its partners are expanding access to expedited security processing. For the first time, certain international passport holders may now be eligible to enroll in CLEAR, providing global travelers with an additional option for faster checkpoint processing during their journey through U.S. airports.
